PORTLAND — A growing law enforcement presence around the ICE facility in Portland has significantly reduced the size of protest crowds, according to witnesses and local officials.
Over the past several nights, demonstrators and counter-protesters have maintained a presence near the facility. But by October 9, organizers say fewer people showed up as police stepped up patrols, made arrests, and installed more barriers. Protestor William Glen said the increased enforcement has had a visible impact: “I think it has affected the protests here … if it took the Portland Police to do that, that’s a good thing.”
Fox 12-KPTV reported that City and federal law enforcement agencies have coordinated closer surveillance, added patrol units, and made about five arrests during one of the recent nights, as confirmed by Portland Police Chief Bob Day. Day stated the city is working to find a balance between public safety and the right to protest: “We made a commitment … we increased our enforcement … we have more officers in the area.”
Sgt. Dan DiMatteo, a Portland Police liaison, said the department is dynamically adjusting its presence based on protest intensity. “There’s not a real need for police presence all the time,” DiMatteo said, adding that officers would scale up or down depending on the actions of protesters and counter-protesters.
Some protestors have expressed frustration and said the presence feels unevenly enforced. One counter-protestor, Horace, said the crackdown is positive: camps near the facility were removed and behavior moderated. But protestor Alexander Sequoia criticized law enforcement actions, claiming bias: “We’re seeing it is not equitable with who is being arrested … they do nothing when people speed past the cops almost knocking people over.”
As demonstrations continue, questions remain over how to maintain public order without undermining civil liberties. With tensions high on immigration issues and rhetoric around ICE, the evolving enforcement tactics at the facility will likely be scrutinized nationally.
TL;DR
Heightened law enforcement around the Portland ICE facility has led to shrinking protest crowds and several arrests. Officials say the increased presence is meant to stabilize the area, but some demonstrators worry about selective enforcement and civil liberties concerns.
