FREEPORT, Texas — Four officers were injured Thursday morning after a fire call at a multi-residential unit in Freeport led to a struggle with a man wanted on outstanding warrants, according to police.

The incident happened just after 8 a.m. in the 1700 block of North Avenue K.

According to the Freeport Police Department, officers were responding to a report of a fire at a multi-residential unit when they learned the address was connected to a man identified as Sidney Franklin.

Police said Franklin was being investigated for failing to register as a sex offender.

When officers made contact with Franklin, police said he immediately ran from them.

Officers attempted to detain him, but police said Franklin began fighting with them during the encounter.

Franklin was eventually taken into custody.

Police said he was arrested on four outstanding warrants and is expected to face additional charges connected to Thursday’s incident.

Four officers were taken to St. Luke’s for evaluation and treatment, according to police.

Three of the injured officers were with the Freeport Police Department.

Police said one of the three Freeport officers was later released to return to duty, while two others remained under medical restrictions.

No additional details about the officers’ injuries were immediately released.

The situation began as a fire response but quickly became a law enforcement incident once officers made contact with Franklin, according to police.

Authorities have not released additional details about the original fire call, including the extent of the fire, whether anyone inside the residence was injured, or whether the fire caused damage to the property.

The case remains under investigation.

Gulf Coast Times will update this story if additional information becomes available from Freeport police or other responding agencies.
