A strong thunderstorm near Freeport is moving through parts of southeastern Brazoria County early Wednesday morning, with gusty winds possible in several local communities.

The National Weather Service issued a Special Weather Statement for Coastal Brazoria and the Brazoria Islands after Doppler radar tracked a strong thunderstorm near Freeport moving east at about 20 mph.

The main concern is wind gusts up to 50 mph. The weather service said gusty winds could knock down tree limbs and blow around unsecured outdoor objects.

Areas that may be impacted include southeastern Lake Jackson, Freeport, Clute, Surfside Beach, Jones Creek and Oyster Creek.

Residents in the affected area should move indoors if outside, secure loose outdoor items and use caution if traveling.

This is a developing weather situation. Gulf Coast Times will continue monitoring for updates from weather officials.
