CLUTE, Texas — A young Brazoria County man remembered by students and staff across the Brazosport ISD community died Wednesday afternoon after a fiery crash involving a Tesla truck at Clute Municipal Park, officials confirmed.

Steven Alvarez, 22, of Clute, was identified as the driver killed in the crash. Alvarez was a 2022 graduate of Brazoswood High School and worked as an IT Technician at Lake Jackson Intermediate School.

In a statement, Brazosport ISD described Alvarez as a valued member of the district who built strong relationships with both students and staff.

“He was a valued member of our BISD family, known for his kindness, willingness to help, and the positive relationships he built with both students and staff,” the district said. “He will be greatly missed across our district and community.”

District officials said crisis counseling support is being made available for students and staff affected by the loss.

The crash happened around 2:36 p.m. Wednesday near Brazoswood Drive and Parkview Drive at Clute Municipal Park.

According to Clute Police Chief James Fitch, witnesses reported seeing the Tesla traveling at a high rate of speed before it left the roadway, became airborne, and slammed into a structure inside the decommissioned pool complex.

Authorities said the impact ejected the driver from the vehicle. Alvarez was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators believe a possible medical episode may have contributed to the crash, though the incident remains under investigation.

“Very early indications are there could have been a medical episode that caused it,” Fitch said.

Following the collision, the Tesla caught fire. Because the vehicle was electric, firefighters remained at the scene for several hours to cool the battery system before crews could safely remove the wreckage.

Police said the vehicle did not enter the pool itself, but the collision caused damage to fencing and a nearby building within the pool complex.

Brazoswood Drive was temporarily shut down in both directions while emergency crews and investigators processed the scene. Roads reopened around 4:20 p.m.

Multiple agencies assisted at the scene, including Clute Police and Fire, Lake Jackson Police and Fire, fire marshals from both cities, and Brazosport ISD Police. Lake Jackson Police Department’s traffic unit also responded with a drone to assist in accident reconstruction.

A memorial honoring Alvarez has since been placed at Lake Jackson Intermediate School, where coworkers and students are remembering him for his positive attitude and willingness to help others.
