FREEPORT, Texas — A summer exhibit at the Freeport Historical Museum is giving local families a close-up look at sharks, ocean life and the natural world along the Texas Gulf Coast.

The museum’s Shark Exhibit is open through Aug. 1 and is designed to give visitors a fun, educational stop during the summer months.

The exhibit includes large shark jaws, life-sized shark models and ocean life displays aimed at helping visitors better understand the environment around them.

A museum staff member told Gulf Coast Times the exhibit is meant “to inspire wonder about the natural environment” and “make people excited to learn about the world around us.”

The Shark Exhibit is designed for visitors of all ages, but younger students may get the most excitement from it.

A staff member said the museum tries to keep the exhibit accessible for everyone, but children in kindergarten through fifth grade often get the biggest reaction.

“We try to keep it for all age groups, but probably K through 5 get the biggest kick out of it,” the staff member said, adding that many of the displays are on their visual level.

That makes the exhibit a local option for parents, grandparents and families looking for a low-cost summer activity close to home.

A Free Local Summer Activity

The Freeport Historical Museum is located at 311 East Park Avenue in historic downtown Freeport.

The museum lists regular hours as Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and says admission is always free.

The Shark Exhibit will remain open through Aug. 1, according to museum staff.

For families trying to find something indoors during the summer heat, the exhibit offers a free educational stop without having to leave Brazoria County.

Why It Matters

Local museums often give families a way to learn about their community without spending a full day or traveling far from home.

The Shark Exhibit adds a science and ocean-life angle to the Freeport Historical Museum’s broader focus on local and coastal history.

For children, it offers a visual, hands-on way to learn. For adults, it gives another reason to stop by the museum and explore a local institution dedicated to Freeport’s history.

As summer begins, the exhibit gives residents and visitors a simple option: step inside, cool off and learn something new about the world just beyond the coast.
