FREEPORT — A house fire destroyed a home on the 1400 block of West 8th Street late last month, spreading to two nearby structures before being contained.

On the morning of August 26th, emergency responders were dispatched at 4:50 AM and arrived at the scene 8 minutes later. Firefighters encountered "Heavy Fire and smoke coming from the roof," said Paul Pennington, Fire marshal for Freeport, Texas.

It took crews 45 minutes to bring the fire under control. The fire spread to two neighboring structures, Pennington said. Although one person was inside the house when the fire started, nobody was injured, including firefighters, residents, or pets.

Investigators are still determining where the fire started, the exact cause, and whether there were any indications the fire was suspicious.

The incident resulted in a total loss of the home. The Red Cross is aiding the residents and Information has been given to United Way for assistance.

It is still under investigation whether working smoke alarms were in the home at the time.
